Deputy Commandant Plans, Policies, and OperationsHQMCWith a career spanning four decades, Lieutenant General Jay M. Bargeron brings a rare depth of experience to our discussion, having begun his service as an enlisted Sailor before commissioning as a Marine Corps officer in 1989. A veteran of nearly every major U.S. conflict of the modern era, his operational deployments include Operations DESERT SHIELD/STORM, IRAQI FREEDOM, and ENDURING FREEDOM, giving him an unparalleled understanding of the demands placed on our deployed forces.
He has commanded at every level, from the platoon to the regimental level, leading the 7th Marine Regiment in combat. His command of the Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force – Crisis Response – Central Command provides him with critical, firsthand experience in leading the type of rapidly deployable, sovereign, sea-based forces that are the focus of today’s panel.
Beyond the battlefield, Lieutenant General Bargeron has been instrumental in shaping the force for the future. He has tackled the very issues of readiness and modernization central to this panel, serving as the Senior Military Assistant to the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness. As a General Officer, he has continued to operate at the strategic forefront of naval integration, commanding the forward-deployed 3d Marine Division in the Pacific and most recently serving as the Director for Strategic Planning and Policy (J-5) at U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.
Lieutenant General Bargeron is a graduate of the Marine Corps' School of Advanced Warfighting and the National War College, complementing his extensive operational experience with a deep academic foundation in strategy and warfighting. His career provides a masterclass in the tactical employment, operational readiness, and strategic necessity of the naval expeditionary forces we are here to discuss.
